PWK jet: everything you need to know about carburettor tuning

Every moped or scooter enthusiast chasing maximum engine performance sooner or later needs to change the carburettor jet. PWK-type carburettors are very popular thanks to a design that prepares the fuel mixture better and makes the engine respond faster to the throttle. But to get the best result, the right PWK jet is a critical component.

What is a PWK jet and why does it matter?

A jet is a calibrated-diameter nozzle that controls the flow of fuel into the engine's combustion chamber. PWK carburettors use main (main jet) and idle (pilot jet) jets.

  • Main jet: Controls the fuel mixture at medium and high revs (when the throttle slide is more than 3/4 open).

  • Pilot jet: Responsible for smooth running at idle and the transition from low to medium revs.

If the jet is too small, there is a risk of a lean mixture – the engine overheats and detonation can occur, which leads to piston damage. If the jet is too big, the mixture becomes too rich, the engine "chokes", smokes and the spark plug quickly fouls with soot.

How do you choose the right PWK jet?

To pick the ideal size, you need to take the engine modifications into account: a sport exhaust, a bigger cylinder or a "sport" air filter.

  1. Assess the current state: First check the colour of the spark plug. A "brick" or milky-coffee colour shows an optimal mixture. White means the mixture is too lean, black/wet means too rich.

  2. Change one step at a time: Never change the jet size drastically. Go up or down by 2–5 sizes at a time until the engine runs the way you want.

  3. Altitude and temperature: Remember that in colder weather or higher humidity the engine needs more fuel, so you may need to fit a slightly larger jet.

Key tips for optimisation

  • Quality: Choose PWK jets from reliable manufacturers only. Inaccurate jet calibration (even if the jet has the same number stamped on it as the original) can ruin your engine settings.

  • Kit: If you are doing more serious engine tuning, we recommend getting a PWK jet kit. It lets you test quickly and find the one option that is best matched to your build.

  • Keep it clean: Even the tiniest bit of dirt or dust in the jet can drastically change the fuel flow. Clean the carburettor regularly and change the fuel filters.

When is it time to change the jet?

If you notice the moped has lost power at high revs, the engine idles poorly or fuel consumption has changed a lot, check the PWK jet first. It is the most effective and cheapest way to "revive" the engine and keep it going for a long time.

Proper tuning is the key to long, mechanically sound riding. Take the time to experiment and feel the difference!
