Measure between the mounting points

Shock absorber length is measured from the centre of the lower mounting point to the centre of the upper one, with the shock unloaded. The length given in the name (e.g. 290, 310 or 340 mm) should match the factory length or be only slightly longer. Also compare the mounting ends – eye or stud – and their diameter and width.

Genuine or replacement

Genuine Piaggio / Gilera or Aprilia shocks replicate the factory ride comfort and fit without any modifications. RMS and TNT replacements are made for the same models and are a practical choice for everyday riding. Performance shocks usually have adjustable spring preload, and some also have adjustable damping.

Signs of wear

A worn shock no longer damps out bouncing: after a pothole the scooter rocks several times, and the rear "floats" in corners. Oil marks on the body mean the seal is leaking and the shock needs replacing. On a scooter the engine is part of the rear suspension, so the rear shock works in tough conditions.

A longer shock

A longer shock raises the rear, so the scooter turns in more quickly but becomes less stable in a straight line. With the rear raised, the centre stand may no longer lift the wheel, and the side stand may leave the scooter standing too upright. If you only want to raise the rear slightly, a shock extender is the simpler option.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what length of shock I need?

Measure your current shock between the centres of its mounting points, or search by the model in the product name. If you are not sure, call +370 608 07699 or email your model and year to info@scootershop.lt.

Can I fit a performance shock to a standard scooter?

You can, as long as the length and mounting ends suit your model. A performance shock is usually stiffer, so everyday riding on bumpy roads will be less comfortable.

Do shocks need replacing in pairs?

If your scooter has two rear shocks, replace them as a pair so both sides work the same. Many 50 cc scooters have a single rear shock, so only that one is replaced.

How do I adjust the spring preload?

On performance shocks, spring preload is adjusted with a threaded collar or a stepped ring on the body. More preload suits a heavier rider or riding two-up; less suits a lighter rider and a softer ride.
