Good to know
How to spot a horizontal Minarelli
On this engine the cylinder lies almost parallel to the ground and points towards the front of the scooter. These engines come in air-cooled and liquid-cooled form, but what matters for the crankshaft is not the cooling method but the gudgeon pin diameter and the stroke. The engine number on the crankcase helps pin down the version.
Pin size: 10 or 12 mm
The small end of the con rod is made for either a 10 or a 12 mm gudgeon pin, and the 12 mm version is usually used with performance cylinders. The crankshaft must match the piston in your cylinder kit: for a PIN12 cylinder, choose for example the Stage6 HPC MKII 12mm or Polini For Race PIN12. If you don't know the pin size, it can be measured with the cylinder removed.
Who needs a performance crankshaft
A stock crankshaft is designed for standard power, so with a 70–80 cc cylinder and high revs its big-end bearing wears faster. The Top Racing HighTech, Malossi MHR RHQ or Stage6 HPC MKII are made for exactly this kind of use. For an everyday Aerox or Nitro with a standard cylinder, a sound standard or reinforced crankshaft is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Minarelli horizontal crankshaft fit a vertical Minarelli engine?
Not always – although the two engines are related, their crankshafts are sold separately and may differ. The safest option is a crankshaft whose name lists your engine type, and if in doubt, email us at info@scootershop.lt.
When should the crankshaft on an Aerox or Nitro be replaced?
It's worth replacing when you hear knocking from the crankcase, the crankshaft has play, or after a piston seizure. If you're changing to a performance cylinder and the old crankshaft is already well worn, it makes sense to replace it too so you don't have to strip the engine again.
How can I check whether the crankshaft is worn?
With the cylinder removed, grip the con rod and move it up and down: any play you can feel means a worn big-end bearing. Also turn the crankshaft by hand – a rumble or tight spots point to worn crankcase bearings.
Does the crankshaft need a new nut?
If the old nut's thread is damaged or it has been tightened many times, it's worth replacing. The category has a TEC M10×1.25 nut that fits the crankshaft and some clutch bells.
