Good to know
How to identify the bulb type
The type is easiest to find on the base or glass of the old bulb – it is stamped there, e.g. BA20D, HS1 or BAY15D, along with the wattage. Three things matter: the base (fitting), the voltage (usually 12 V on scooters) and the wattage. A higher-wattage bulb can overheat the headlight housing and put too much load on the alternator.
BA15S vs BAY15D
A BA15S has one contact and one filament – it is mostly used in indicators. A BAY15D has two contacts and two filaments, so a single bulb works as both the tail light and the brake light; its pins are set at different heights so you can't fit it the wrong way round.
LED instead of incandescent
LED bulbs use less power and stand up better to vibration, which makes them useful on scooters with a weak alternator. When switching indicator bulbs to LED you need an electronic relay, and in the headlight an LED bulb doesn't always give an even beam, because the reflector is designed for an incandescent bulb.
Headlight bulb holder
If the bulb keeps working loose, flickers or the holder contacts are burnt, replace the holder as well as the bulb – holders are available for Yamaha Aerox, Booster and Neos headlights. Burnt contacts point to a poor connection, which makes the holder overheat and can melt the headlight plastic. Connect the new holder firmly and check that the bulb doesn't move in it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a more powerful bulb in the headlight?
It isn't recommended: a more powerful bulb heats the headlight housing and reflector more, and the scooter's alternator may not be able to cope with it. For brighter light, choose a quality bulb of the same wattage and clean the headlight lens.
What is the difference between S2 and HS1 bulbs?
Both are twin-filament 12 V 35/35 W bulbs for dipped and main beam, but their bases differ: the S2 has a BA20D base, while the HS1 has a PX43t base, similar to the H4. They are not interchangeable, so choose the one whose marking is on your old bulb.
Do blue-light bulbs shine better?
The blue tint of the glass gives a cooler light, but it absorbs some of it, so the road is lit no more brightly than with a standard bulb. If visibility in the dark matters most, go for a standard clear bulb.
How do I find out which bulbs my scooter needs?
Look at the marking on the old bulb or the bulb table in your scooter's manual. If that's not possible, email your model and year to info@scootershop.lt or call +370 608 07699.
