Description
The choice of air filter for Aprilia scooters or motorcycles depends on your model (e.g. SR50, Atlantic, Scarabeo or larger-displacement motorcycles) and on any engine modifications.
As Aprilia uses various systems, here are the main things to look out for when choosing a filter:
1. The main types
-
Standard (original type): A paper or foam filter designed for a standard engine. It gives the engine the best protection against dust and sand. If your scooter is standard, always choose this type.
-
Performance (high-flow): These are usually multi-layer foam filters (e.g. Malossi Red Sponge) that let the engine "breathe" more easily.
-
IMPORTANT: After fitting a performance filter, the carburettor must be re-jetted (a larger main jet / main jet), otherwise the engine will get too much air, the mixture will go lean and the engine may seize (overheat).
-
2. What to check before buying
As Aprilia models (e.g. the SR50) changed engines over their production life (Minarelli, Piaggio or Morini engines were fitted), the airboxes can differ:
-
Shape: Is the filter rectangular, round or oval?
-
Mounting: Does the filter fit into the original airbox, or is it a "mushroom" (pod) type mounted directly on the carburettor?
-
Model year: The Aprilia SR50 up to 2003 and from 2004 (the Factory model) use completely different air filtration systems.
3. Maintenance tips
-
Foam filters: These need to be washed regularly in a dedicated cleaner or in warm water with washing-up liquid, dried and always lightly oiled with dedicated air filter oil. A dry foam filter lets dust through, which wears away the piston assembly like sandpaper.
-
Paper filters: These are not washable. If the paper is grey or black, the filter must be replaced with a new one.
