Length and fitting angles
A universal hose is chosen by length and the angles of its ends – for example, the Stage6 hose is 110 cm long, with its ends angled at 90° and 25°. Measure the old hose and turn the handlebar both ways: the new hose must not stretch, twist or touch the tyre or mudguard.
Fitting and bleeding
The hose is attached to the caliper and master cylinder with a hollow (banjo) bolt and two sealing washers – always replace these with new ones. After fitting, bleed the system and check that the lever feels firm and the joints are dry. Wipe off any brake fluid that gets onto painted surfaces straight away – it eats into paint.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it worth replacing an old brake hose?
A rubber hose ages over the years and swells slightly under braking, so the lever becomes spongy and braking is less precise. A new hose restores a firm lever feel and reduces the risk of leaks.
Will a Galfer hose fit a performance caliper?
A model-specific Galfer hose is designed for the original system, so with a different caliper or adapter its length may not be enough. In that case it's easier to choose a universal hose by length, such as Stage6 or ECO.
