Good to know
Standard or performance ignition
A standard stator and flywheel (rotor) generate current for the spark, the lights and charging the battery. A performance internal-rotor ignition is much lighter, so the engine revs up faster, but the lower inertia can make it hold a steady low idle less well.
Kits like these are mostly chosen for tuned engines and racing.
With or without lights
"With lights" in the name means the ignition has a lighting coil and can power the lamps. Some versions, such as the MVT Minarelli AM6, are made for bikes without a battery. If you ride on public roads, choose a version with lighting – without it your lights won't work.
Minarelli 6- or 12-coil
Minarelli engines can have a stator with 6 or 12 coils, and these parts are not interchangeable. Take off the engine cover and count the coils on the stator – then you'll know exactly which version to order. OEM 12-coil flywheels and stators are no longer made, so a TNT kit can be chosen instead.
Removing and fitting the flywheel
You need a special puller to remove the flywheel – don't try to knock it off with a hammer, as you'll damage the crankshaft or the rotor. Before fitting, clean the crankshaft taper and the keyway, and tighten the nut to the manufacturer's specified torque. Also check that the woodruff key isn't worn – a rotor that has shifted changes the ignition timing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know the stator has failed?
The most common signs are no spark, dim lights or a battery that won't charge. Measure the resistance of the coils with a multimeter and compare it with the workshop manual figures: a coil that is open or shorting to earth means the stator needs replacing.
Is a performance ignition suitable for everyday riding?
Yes, if you choose a version with lighting and the engine is tuned. On a standard scooter a performance ignition won't give much of an advantage, and the light rotor can make riding at low revs more difficult.
What's the difference between Derbi EURO 2/3 and EURO 4 ignitions?
They are ignition systems for different generations of Derbi engines, so their parts are not interchangeable. You can work out the engine generation from the bike's year of manufacture and the engine number – if in doubt, send us the model and year.
Do I need to replace the CDI along with the ignition?
Performance ignition kits usually come with their own electronic unit, so the old CDI is no longer needed. When replacing a standard stator with an identical one, there's no need to change the CDI as long as it works properly.
