Description
Sports water pump (Piaggio / Gilera)
A sports water pump is a common upgrade for those building "Sport" or "Mid-Race" class engines. Its main purpose is to ensure more efficient coolant circulation, especially at high revs, when a standard pump may "no longer cope" with the extra heat.
Why choose a sports water pump?
-
Increased flow: Sports impellers are designed to pump a greater volume of coolant at the same engine revs. This keeps the engine's operating temperature lower.
-
Better cooling control: Especially important for "tuned" 70cc or more powerful cylinders, which generate far more heat than original 50cc cylinders.
-
Reduced risk of overheating: A sports pump helps avoid "heat spikes" on long journeys or when riding at top speed.
Main types
-
Upgraded impellers (CNC/plastic): This is the most common choice. Only the internal impeller is replaced. The new ones have better blade aerodynamics, so the coolant circulates more smoothly.
-
Complete water pump kits: These are sets that often include not only the impeller but also a stronger shaft, upgraded bearings and oil seals. It is a comprehensive solution if your original pump is already "tired".
-
Electric water pumps (BOSCH type): This is a radical solution. An electric pump works independently of engine revs, so it ensures constant circulation even at idle. However, fitting one requires modifications to the wiring.
Technical fitting tips
-
Compatibility: Piaggio/Gilera engines (NRG, Runner, Zip SP) have a specific water pump drive, driven from the balance shaft. When buying an impeller, always make sure it is made for your particular engine generation (e.g. Piaggio Hi-Per2).
-
Oil seals matter: If you are upgrading to a sports impeller, it is strongly recommended to replace the water pump oil seals and gaskets at the same time. A sports pump generates higher pressure, so old, tired seals may start to leak coolant.
-
Bleeding: This is the most important step. After any water pump repair you must remove the air from the cooling system. On Piaggio engines, use the bleed screw on the cylinder head or radiator to avoid air locks.
-
Lubrication: Before fitting the new impeller on the shaft, lightly grease the sealing points so the oil seal lasts longer and doesn't run "dry" during the first turns.
When do you really need a sports pump?
-
If you are fitting a 70cc or larger "Racing" cylinder.
-
If you have noticed the engine getting hot when ridden at high revs for a long time.
-
If you have to strip the water pump for a repair anyway – it makes sense to "invest" in a higher-performance component straight away.
