Fitting an IP65 LED strip
IP65 means the strip is protected against dust and water jets, so it can be fitted under the scooter's body panels or on the frame. Check what voltage the strip is designed for, and connect it to the battery circuit via a separate switch and fuse. Degrease the surface before sticking it down so the strip doesn't peel off.
Number plate light
The number plate must be lit after dark, so a broken or non-working plate light is worth replacing straight away. When fitting it to a short tail or a sport number plate holder, aim the light from above or the side so it falls evenly across the whole plate.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I mount an LED strip on a scooter?
Usually under the floor panels, under the seat or along the frame, so the light falls to the sides or onto the ground and the strip itself is protected from knocks. Route the wires away from the exhaust and moving parts, and insulate the connection with heat-shrink tubing.
Is additional lighting allowed on the road?
Decorative lighting must not dazzle other road users, and red light at the front and blue light are not suitable at all, as they are reserved for other signals. It's safest to use it when parked or to choose a neutral white light aimed downwards.
Will an LED strip drain the battery?
An LED strip draws little current, but if it's wired straight to the battery without a switch it can drain it during a longer lay-up. Connect it through the ignition switch or a separate switch.
