Good to know
Internal rotor ignitions
Performance ignitions such as MVT Digital Direct or Polini Evolution by PVL use an internal rotor that is lighter than the stock flywheel, so the engine revs up faster. The "with lights" version has a lighting coil, while the "without battery" version is meant for scooters that have no battery. Minarelli versions differ in the number of coils (6 or 12) – choose the one that matches your stock stator.
Reading spark plug codes
An NGK plug code tells you the thread, heat range and reach: for example, BR6HS means a 14 mm thread, a resistor (R), heat range 6 and a 12.7 mm reach (H). In the NGK system a higher number means a colder plug, which is what tuned engines need. A healthy plug has a light brown insulator, while a black, wet one points to a mixture that is too rich.
CDI, coil and starter
If there's no spark, replace the spark plug and check the plug cap first, then move on to the coil and the CDI; the easiest way to find the fault is to swap a part for one you know works. A starter that only clicks usually means a weak battery or a faulty starter relay rather than a bad starter motor.
Looking after the battery
Scooters use 12 V batteries; when choosing one, what matters are the dimensions, capacity and terminal layout (positive on the left or the right). Take the battery out for the winter, keep it somewhere warm and top it up now and then with a low-current charger – once fully discharged, it quickly loses capacity.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which performance ignition will fit my engine?
Ignitions are made for a specific engine family – Minarelli, Minarelli AM6, Piaggio/Gilera, Peugeot horizontal or Derbi – so identify your engine first. If in doubt, email your scooter's model and year to info@scootershop.lt or call +370 608 07699.
When should I replace the spark plug?
On a two-stroke scooter it's worth replacing the plug every few thousand kilometres or once a season, and sooner if it starts becoming hard to start or begins to stutter. In four-stroke engines the plug lasts longer; the manufacturer specifies the interval.
Will a scooter run without a battery?
Many two-stroke scooters with a kick-starter will start without a battery, but the electric starter, horn, indicators or brake light may not work. Some models do need a battery, because it powers the CDI or the fuel pump.
What's the difference between an ignition coil and a CDI?
The CDI unit controls when the spark happens, while the coil turns low voltage into the high voltage the spark plug needs. If either part fails there will be no spark, so it's handy to test them by swapping one at a time.
